BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

Halls of Saint Gery - Free entrance. The Les Halles Saint-Gery was once the site of a an 11th century cathedral, public square and a large indoor market. Now a protected listed building, the space has been transformed into an Exhibition Center, Cafe, and Bar.

Wiertz Museum - Free entrance. Antoine Wiertz (1806-65) was a Belgian painter, sculptor and writer during the Romantic period. He gained a controversial reputation due to his giant size paintings and dramatic subject matter. Art lovers of all genre are sure to enjoy this museum.

August - The Southbank Centre and The Central Bar at the Royal Festival Hall invite you to join music lovers at the Free lunchtime Friday Lunch Concert series.

Royal Academy of Arts - Has been run by artists since 1768. Their mission has always been to champion art and artists. In celebration of their 250 year history, a newly expanded campus has opened which links the Piccadilly and Burlington Galleries. There are many free exhibitions and displays.

Whitechapel Gallery - Founded in 1901, the Whitechapel is an important international art gallery that showcased, for the first time in London, many contemporary modern masters, such as Picasso, Pollock, Hockney, Rothko, Twombly, and Frida Kahlo. You can be sure to see what's new, innovative, and cutting edge when you visit the Whitechapel.

VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Wiener Rathaus Film Festival - Free film festival from June to September. 

MUSA Start Gallery - Showcases 8 - 10 exhibitions for recent graduates of Vienna's art universities. Via jury selection, the artists are given a solo exhibit, which allows them a venue for their work to enter the art market. Free entry for all ages

OstLicht Gallery for Photography - The OstLicht team of specialists endeavor to find, represent, and present unique works by unknown and up and coming photographers. In addition to holding special exhibitions, they preside over the WestLicht Photo Auction. You may peruse the shop, gallery, and library for free. Special exhibitions may require a ticket purchase. The OstLicht Gallery is located in the 120 year old Anker Bread Factory, Brotfabrik Wien, which has been re-purposed into a vibrant neighborhood art and cultural center, so give yourself the opportunity to wander around at your own pace.

NEWS ABOUT EUROPE 

If you are interested in learning more about Europe (aside from tourist information) before your travel date, the online independent New Europe newspaper is a very good source. They have NO political affiliation and strive "to present factually-correct information"..."that enriches the public dialogue"... and "supports sound decision-making". Their audience "includes European Institutions, policymakers, politicians, governments, and NGO’s", among others. You may use their search field to find topics of interest and then narrow your search further by checking filter boxes.

Another good source of information is the student run Brussels, Belgium organization known as Eyes On Europe. In addition to writing articles for their site, a newsletter and a magazine, they "organize conferences, debates, visits, social activities and partnerships with other European and local organizations." Their highest goal is striving to raise "awareness of European citizens, and the development of a critical goal of fairness towards the European Union."
